Farewell symposium Prof. dr. Jean-Claude Davin

vrijdag 10 juni 2011 - vrijdag 10 juni 2011
Lokatie: 'de brakke Grond' Amsterdam
Website: www.amc.nl/congres

Jean-Claude Davin has been chief of the EKZ paediatric nephrology department for more than 15 years. During this period, the department grew from a small unit with no research lines to one of the leading paediatric nephrology units in The Netherlands. He facilitated or supervised research projects including studies to the immunological
response in children with end-stage renal disease, late somatic and psychosocial consequences of end-stage renal disease in children, nephrotic syndrome, Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome and Primary Hyperoxaluria.
In patient care, he was one of the first paediatric nephrologists in The Netherlands who reflected the downside of a prolonged period of peritoneal dialysis over haemodialysis in children who could not be transplanted. As a result of this, a frequent haemodialysis programme
started in 1996 which improved the overall condition of children. In 1998, the unit started with the first home-haemodialysis programme in The Netherlands, in close collaboration with Dianet Utrecht and Dialysis Centre Groningen.
Immunological disorders leading to renal disease have been Jean Claude’s main interest. From IgA nephropathy and Henoch-Schoenlein disease on which he spent most of his scientific career in Liege, he changed his focus in Amsterdam to nephrotic syndrome and DHemolytic Uremic Syndrome. He was the first who showed that patients with a factor H-mutation associated D-HUS could have a renal transplant, as long as the patient continued to be treated with plasmapheresis. With his persistence to start an international trial with the commercially unattractive cheap, well-known, but never properly investigated drug levamisole in nephrotic syndrome, he has shown his social involvement in medical care. His long-lasting honorary aid to paediatric nephrologists in Cuba illustrates his social feelings as well as his love for Latin America. The appointment as professor in paediatric nephrology at the University Children’s Hospital Queen Fabiola in Brussels is a well-deserved crowning glory of his career.
This farewell symposium is a tribute to the work of Jean-Claude in all its facets. We are very happy that we have found leading world scientists willing to give a lecture on some of the topics that Jean-Claude has been working on. We hope that you will enjoy the programme.
